Northern Steel Industries is located in Burns Harbor, Indiana. From this facility our team coordinates the delivery of thousands of tons of steel per year.
Our Legacy
The company was established in 1975 by “Big Al” Kumskis. After a football career that began at Chicago’s Mt Carmel High School and took him to the Miami Hurricanes and then the Cleveland Browns Al came back to Chicago where he began a career in the steel industry. After serving at many different levels in the business he left an established position at a large service center to chase a vision he had of owning his own company. In 1975 he and his wife Nancy opened Northern Steel Industries.
Big Al left this world in 2015, but his passion for forging long term trusting relationships with customers and suppliers remains well intact and is one of our base principles.
Our Vision
Big Al turned his company over to his son, Scott Kumskis. Scott’s vision for Northern Steel was to expand the company from a steel procurement business to offering full service processing.
Then, in 2021, Northern Steel purchased a major processing facility and moved its headquarters to Burns Harbor, Indiana.
When visiting Northern Steel’s offices you may notice a statue of a Bald Eagle on the property. This eagle represents the vision of the company founded nearly 50 years ago.
